Christian Relation to Authority

Dec 14, 2025    Willie Broeders

Christian’s relationship to authority is a vital expression of faith and obedience to God. Drawing from 1 Peter 2:13–17, it shows that submission to governing authorities is not optional, political, or based on the worthiness of rulers, but is rendered “for the Lord’s sake” because God sovereignly ordains all authority. Such submission serves as a powerful witness, silencing accusations against the gospel through righteous conduct. At the same time, Christian submission is not blind; believers must obey God above all and practice humble, respectful “obedient disobedience” when commanded to sin. Ultimately, Christians live as free people who gladly serve God, honoring all, loving the church, fearing God, and honoring rulers, so that their lives give credibility to the gospel and display trust in God’s sovereign rule.
