The Urgency of the Hour

In Romans 13:11–14, Paul calls believers to live with urgency and spiritual alertness because Christ’s return is drawing near and the time for faithful service is limited. He warns Christians not to drift into spiritual sleep through complacency, distraction, or worldly compromise, but to wake up and recognize the significance of the present moment in God’s redemptive plan. Using the contrast of night and day, Paul urges believers to cast off the deeds of darkness—such as drunkenness, sexual sin, strife, and jealousy—and instead put on the “armor of light” by living lives marked by holiness, integrity, and readiness for Christ’s coming. The climax of the passage is the command to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” and make no provision for the flesh, meaning believers are to actively pursue Christlikeness while cutting off the habits, thoughts, and situations that feed sinful desires. The lesson emphasizes that understanding the urgency of the hour should produce immediate, practical obedience and a life fully devoted to Christ.
